Specific Saturation Magnetization

The sigmameter is designed to measure the specific saturation magnetization (σs) of a material. This parameter characterizes a ferromagnetic phase and is, in principle, independent of the structure and shape of the sample. When a ferromagnetic compound is placed in a magnetic field it becomes magnetized. Magnetization increases with field strength until it reaches a maximum.

The specific saturation magnetization (σs) is the ratio of the maximum magnetic moment to the mass of the material (the magnetic moment being determined by driving a sample out of the magnetic field and measuring the e.m.f. induced in a coil). The integral is proportional to the σs value for the sample, provided that the sample was saturated in the field. The reading unit microprocessor integrates the e.m.f., calculates either the σs value or the content of the ferromagnetic phase, and indicates the value on a digital display.
